so i was just at my sister's house, chillin with my niece, having a good time. my sister is a big fan of the show "what not to wear" and she is also into the one that they make you look 10 years younger. well as we were figuring out my flier she had "what not to wear" on... every time i see it i dislike it more! lol! it isn't because the hosts are annoying {and they are!} but i just really don't like the fact that they rip people apart! they take someones whole wardrobe and throw it away. but before they throw out everything, they take the person into a little room that is all mirrors. and they make fun of them and how they dress! it's like the school yard x 10!!!! and then they pick out cloths that are like something out of a cookie cutter! i mean they did a dude and the chic host was laughing because he matched, completely, the dude host! i mean come on! is it that bad to be an individual? the people on the show say that it helps them feel much more confident and comfortable. how the hell can you be confident and comfortable trying to be someone else?! i just don't get it! ugh, i just don't know. you know how i am... i think everyone has their own beauty, and it just gets me frustrated that no one seems to take the time on tv to realize it! i mean on the 10 years younger show they pumped everyone full of botox and slapped some vaniers on them! i mean don't people think madonna is beautiful? she has a big ol gap in her teeth! {one that seams to come and go as often as her style choices... but none the less, she's still sexy if she has it right?} i just don't get this need to look plastic or like everyone else. did you know that only 16% of women are born blond in the u.s.? how many blonds do you see in a day?! a lot more than 16%... especially in socal! lol! so all this got me thinking. i love to focus on the positive.. well i wanna do it more often! not only for myself, but for the world around me. so i know that you all are beautiful people, but i wan to tell you all that. sooooo step right up, let me know if you want to know why I think you are beautiful. i will post a comment on your site. i want you to see yourself through my eyes. :) i want you all to see how truly beautiful you all are! :D don't be shy.... step on up. ;)

Well put! I think there are two problems with the whole beauty standard thing.

First, every has their own taste. o.k., there is the current definition of what is hot as put out by the industry (and Cosmo and Playboy are equally to blame...both sides do it!). Well, good for them. Not everyone's taste runs to that so if you don't look like that -so what? Frankly, the anorexic look never did it for me but I did have a girlfriend once who was rail-thin (just how she was built). Would I have picked her out of a line-up as looking "hot"? No way! But that wasn't why I went out with her.

Second, never mind what is and isn't beautiful, why is that so important? It is only a component of what you are anyway. I can't play pro football (nor would I want to -lol!), I don't look like Johnny Depp (nor would I want to - although only because I'm happy with who I am), I can't play guitar like Eric Clapton (o.k., that one I would like to do). So what? I can do lots of other things. We teach our children (girls more than boys) that looks are everything. Well, they're not. So what if you are physically "beautiful" or not (by whatever standard you chose)? We can't all be super-models, but so what if we're not? Why should that be important? Do people have less self-esteem because they can't sing like Jewel? Why should they have any less self-esteem if they don't look like a model? No one expects to be able to sing like Jewel, why should they expect to look like a model? Shame on our society for making people think they should be AND EVEN CAN BE something that they just aren't. Some of us are models, some of us bake bread. Big deal.

I could rant on for hours on this topic. I have two teenage daughters who are pretty comfortable in their own skin but the programming they are exposed to drives me nuts. Ugh!
